Education
Music is a really hard thing to do right.
A lot of times when I write I feel as though
I'm having some kind of mental block.
With such a diverse world of music it's hard to find anything new.
There's very little that hasn't been done before.
But another part of music, the more important part
is to enjoy ones own creation.
Artists that are truly happy are able to
listen to their own song and identify
things that they really want to change and
things they really like.
More than anything during the time
that I've been writing,
which isn't very long,
I've tried to keep an open mind and not get discouraged
Fact is, I sucked when I started.
But everybody sucks when they start.
Can you imagine how much time Jimi practiced,
or how long it took Carlos before he got his sound right?
The most important thing is to have fun,
and to enjoy what you can do.
Being distressed because you don't
sound like someone else is completely irrelevant.
Throughout the two-plus years I've been playing
I've always tried to appreciate what sounds good
and improve what sounds bad.
Being happy about music is a choice.
And there are certain people who can't honestly
say that they like or appreciate what they
play or listen to. Have you heard some of
the amazingly strange stuff they listen
to at Bull Moose? Metal scraping things,
car horns, I mean, come on, do you really enjoy that?
But it's important to find the music
that you like,
I listen to some obscure stuff
But you've probably heard of most
of my favorite bands.
Sure I listen to mainstream,
but the mainstream I listen to is music that
I really enjoy.
So I guess all that this means is
that I hope that everyone can
enjoy the music that they listen to.
And not overcritize it. Or be afraid to criticize it.
Thanks,
Kevin
